Wood Rot and Wood Rot Treatment

Wood Rot

The wood used in construction should not deteriorate over time unless it is exposed to moisture. Wood will rot when wood-rotting fungus grows on the timber slowly eating away at the wood.

What is Wood Rot

Wood rot comes in two forms. White rot causes the colour of the wood to become lighter and fibrous in texture. Brown rot causes wood to become darker. Both white and brown rot will lead to cracking although brown rot is distinguishable from white rot because brown rot causes wood to crack both across and down the grain.

Not all fungus causes wood to rot but – if there is fungus – then there is too much moisture in the air and wood rot will probably follow.

What are the Causes of Wood Rot

Timber used in properties with excess moisture and damp will suffer from wood rot. It is also possible that the timber used is already infected with wood rot. That is why it is important to always use materials treated with a fungicide and, if in doubt, speak to a wood rot specialist.

How to Identify Wood Rot

The most noticeable symptoms of wood rot are discolouring of the wood and/or a mushroom like smell. You may even see fungus growing on the wood. Other ways to check for rotting wood are to check whether it feels sort and – in cases where it is not obviously viable – to use a hammer to knock the wood and listen for a hollow sound. If unsure and to be on the safe side, Derwent Damp Proofing can inspect your property for sines of rot and other types of damp.
